First of all, feel free to write a review no matter where you’re from, be it Tokyo, Stockholm, Los Angeles, or whatever. I’m hoping that people from all over the world use this website and write concert reviews.
Why should you write a review? The best reason is to give fellow jazz fans a heads up about a particularly good or bad concert. This is especially true if an artist is going to be playing in a location for more than one night and you caught them on an early night. It is true to a lesser extent if a musician is on tour. Don’t bother if it’s a one shot deal.
Try to give as many details as possible. Give us an idea of what we’re in for, so we can make an informed decision as consumers as to whether or not a certain concert is worth attending. I once walked out of a ’supergroup’ concert with Randy Brecker, Allan Holdsworth and Stanley Clarke (I forget who the drummer was) because they ignored the advice of the hall’s sound engineer and turned up the volume of their amps so high you could hear nothing but distortion. And I was a student with no money at the time!
If a musician’s performance sucks, tell us WHY it sucks, and the same goes if you’re ecstatic about a performance.
Thanks, and I wish you all an endless parade of awesome concert performances.
