JAZZBO NOTES RECOMMENDED RECORDING
Rating:

It’s kind of funny to hear an CD of soul jazz covers of Beck tunes. I think maybe that’s the point.
Oddly enough, Beck’s tunes turn out to be pretty well suited to a jazz organ trio format. Lonnie Smith (organ) and Doug Munro (guitar) do a good job of interpreting the tunes. In fact, Lonnie Smith sounds more inspired than I’ve ever heard him, other than in a live setting. David “Fathead” Newman lends his mighty sax to several selections.
Boogaloo to Beck won’t blow you away, but it’s a pleasant listen, and it’ll make you chuckle.
