Now, this won’t be news to a lot of you, but John McLaughlin and Chick Corea are touring together right now in what they’re calling the Five Peace Band, and will be for the next few months at least. The reason I’m writing about it is, I figure if I hadn’t heard about it, some of you might not have either.
This is big news, folks!
Corea’s and McLaughlin’s recorded output has been spotty for many years now, but when I heard them together on some YouTube clips, they were smoking!
As some of you might remember, these giants played together on Bitches’ Brew and Miles’ Washington D.C. club date, Live Evil. There was a reason those old recordings were so great. Most of the musicians in Miles’ band were future stars in their own right.
On the YouTube clips, you can tell that Corea and McLaughlin are pushing each other. They both sound rejuvenated — hotter than they’ve been in years. Neither one of these guys has lost a step in terms of technique. In McLaughlin’s case, his technique has actually improved from his glory days in the 70s and 80s.
Folks, these jazz giants aren’t getting any younger. I know McLaughlin is in his 60s and probably Corea is, too. Catch these guys while you can, or you’ll kick yourselves later. You can find the tour dates on Chick Corea’s website, here.
