I saw` Miles once in Boston during the “silent way” period. After his set, it was just the two of us in the mens room. He borrowed my comb. Great! Then I did it as he was leaving: “Miles, why don’t you play If I were a bell, man?” He just looked at me - smiled and walked out.
Dude, I’m surprised he smiled at you. (Unless you were kidding. Were you pulling his leg?) If there’s anything musicians hate, especially guys like Miles, it’s when they’re asked to play their old music, because they’re usually excited about what they’re playing right now.
Cool memory, though.
Michael,
I wish I HAD been kidding.
The truth is I was just young and stupid.
coolbreeze,
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s normal to make a fool of yourself when you meet your heroes. God knows I’ve done it. I once got a chance to talk to Mike Stern after a show. I don’t remember what I said, but I’m sure it was moronic — I think I blocked the memory out from sheer embarrassment.
Even great musicians aren’t immune. Dave Liebman was totally starstruck when he first played with Miles Davis and Elvin Jones.
Thanks Michael,
You’re right of course.

My self-esteem is intact but I do view my younger self with amusement.
