JAZZBO NOTES ESSENTIAL RECORDING
Rating:

Jim Beard has chops to burn, an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz, is a wizardly producer, and is one of the few people who can make synthesizers sound warm and human, but you’ll never catch him showing off. Beard puts all his expertise in the service of ideas, wherever his imagination and boundless enthusiasm for seemingly incompatible genres of music might lead him.
In that sense, Truly is a typical Jim Beard recording.
To those not listening closely, Truly might sound like smooth jazz, which could not be further from the truth. On the contrary, Beard’s music is extremely adventurous, combining elements of marches, jazz, circus music, various world musics, humor, and so on.
And for those folks who insist on only listening to music which showcases virtuosity, pay close attention and you’ll be rewarded with intricate keyboard solos that are so precise that they almost sound through composed.
