JAZZBO NOTES RECOMMENDED RECORDING
Rating:

Unlike earlier Tribal Tech releases, Rocket Science (on the Tone Center label) is heavily focused on group improvisation rather than being a mix of through composed sections and improv. That means that the tune structures tend to be rather simple.
So if you require complex compositions as stimulation, you’re out of luck. If you’re satisfied with killer grooves, insane displays of technical virtuosity, and telepathic group interplay, then you’ll probably dig Rocket Science.
I’m making it all sound like Rocket Science is pretty one-note, but really it’s not. There’s a surprising amount of variety on Rocket Science. The quartet of Scott Henderson (guitar), Gary Willis (bass), Scott Kinsey (keys), and Kirk Covington (drums) churn out different grooves and different tempos with a large tonal pallette.
You’ll be able to figure out very quickly if this music is for you from the samples provided.
Personally, I like compositions and arrangements, but I also appreciate technical virtuosity and grooves, so I’m recommending Rocket Science, but I prefer Tribal Tech’s older albums, like Illicit.
