JAZZBO NOTES ESSENTIAL RECORDING

Rating: ★★★★★

Normally, I wouldn’t include an album like Milton on this website. It’s a Brazilian pop album. All of the songs have lyrics and are sung by the great Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento.

But I have my reasons for including this release. Milton (released on the Verve label) includes improvisations by Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, and Raul De Souza on trombone. These are three of the very finest jazz improvisationists on their respective instruments and they’ve never been better than on this album.

They were clearly inspired by the high quality of the material and incomparable sonic backdrop provided by their Brazilian counterparts, all regular members of Milton Nascimento’s groups. These musicians include Hugo Fatteruso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on guitars, Novelli on bass, Airto on percussion, and Roberto Silva on drums.

The result in my opinion can only be called World Fusion.

You should probably be aware that the songs on Milton are some of his most familiar songs from previous albums, and as such constitutes a sort of best of collection. In pretty much every case, the version on this album is the definitive one.

If you are at all interested in Milton Nascimento as an artist, this is place to start. As far as I’m concerned, this is his absolute best album.

I’ve given Milton my highest rating, not only because it is superb, but also because I want to urge my readers to check out the samples. If you dig Milton Nascimento’s vocal style at all, you should take the leap and purchase Milton. It only gets better, I promise.

I’m so happy you list this album! It’s one of my favorites. I discovered Nascimento while looking for Flora Purim’s version of “Fairy Tale Song”, I didn’t think I’d like his version (and wasn’t aware that it was his own composition) but I gave it a try and quickly grew to love it. And I also discovered that the entire Milton album is *fantastic*! Love love love Saidas E Bandeiras and the contributions of all of the other musicians on this and the other pieces, especially Wayne Shorter. Milton is one of the few albums that I happily allow to play from start to finish.
