Folks, I am so excited I’m about to wet my pants. One of the greatest live dates of all time, Dave Liebman’s Pendulum, recorded at the Village Vangard in the late 70s, has just been re-released by Mosaic Records. It has never been released in CD form.

But that’s not all. Get this: it is not only being re-released, but TWO CDS worth of material from the same date are seeing the light of day for the first time ever! I cannot stress enough what a big deal this is.

The legendary original date featured one of the greatest quintets in jazz history: Dave Liebman on sax, Richie Beirach on piano, Randy Brecker on trumpet, the great unsung bassist Frank Tusa, and Al Foster on drums.

The Dave Liebman Quintet’s version of Wayne Shorter’s Footprints is THE definitive one, and Richie Beirach’s Pendulum is one of the greatest modal tunes and performances of all time. (For more gushing, see my post Pendulum - Dave Liebman.)

I’ve just ordered the 3 CD set from Mosaic (I’ve added their link to my site) and I will be doing a review as soon as I can after the set arrives. Taking a peek at the track list, the two additional CDs are mostly covers of other people’s tunes. I wish there had been more originals, but oh, well. I can’t believe that there won’t be some spectacular performances in those extra CDs, considering how phenomenal the band is.

I’ve listened to the clips on the Mosaic site, and as expected, the band is electrifying. If you’re interested, here’s where you can listen to the clips, or for that matter order the CD set, if you can’t stand to wait for my review.
